NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A resourceful runaway alone in the wilds of Los Angeles, twelve-year-old Billy Straight suddenly witnesses a brutal stabbing in Griffith Park. Fleeing into the night, Billy cannot shake the horrific memory of the savage violence, nor the pursuit of a cold-blooded killer. For wherever Billy turns—from Hollywood Boulevard to the boardwalks of Venice—he is haunted by the chuck, chuck sound of a knife sinking into flesh.

“Taut, compelling . . . Everything a thriller ought to be. The writing is excellent. The plotting is superior. The characters ring true.”—USA Today

As LAPD homicide detective Petra Connor desperately searches for the murderer, as the media swarms mercilessly around the story, the vicious madman stalks closer to his prey. Only Petra can save Billy. But it will take all her cunning to uncover a child lost in a fierce urban labyrinth—where a killer seems right at home.

A good read

I enjoyed this book. Each chapter is told from the point of view of one person: Detective, witness, killer, various others. I had previously read and enjoyed "Twisted" by the same author, featuring the same detective, so I sought out more of his work. Obviously this book is over 20 years old, so some of the methods and technology are dated, but seem correct for the time. I didn't find any glaring technical errors that turned me off, as I had found in another famous crime novel author's work. I don't read his stuff anymore.

Petra is great, all by herself

The post OJ setting in the book added an interesting edge. However it was ironic what they were trying to avoid was Indeed the case. I enjoyed the characters and like watching Petra work almost as much as the Milo-Alex team! I hope that she and Ron hit it off. The suspense was good and following the case was exciting. Following along with Billy from his point of view added a lot of heart and I was really pulling for him.

A lot of the actions being figured out by the detectives time and time again began to seem just a wee bit out there, but what do I know I'm not a detective right?

Really enjoyed this book, as I do all of Jonathan's writing. Keep them coming!

So many characters it was hard to keep track with how their intersections the the main characters mattered but they did. They all came together at the end. Now i need to re-read the chapters I just skimmed through. Not just insignificant details I learned

This Kept Me On My Toes

I have been a fan of J. Kellerman's for years, before I began reading eBooks and then stopped for awhile. Past reviews of Billy Straight prompted me to pick up this book, and I fully agreed with the high ratings. The plot did not seem formulaic. It was interesting, of course had twists and turns, and I became involved with Billy and the detectives. Occasionally there were a few too many people named for me to keep track. The book was also well organized - usually alternating chapters between one focusing on Billy and one on the detectives or allied characters. Most of the time, I easily visualizing everybody and everything going on.This was a completely satisfying story: well written, interesting characters, and not too formulaic.

Slow Read and loads of Details

A good plot but way too much detail. The Editing should have been better at their jobs. Much of the detail wasn’t needed for the plot and the story itself. The characters were interesting enough. This made the book a slow read. Read it for yourself and see if you agree.

I'm not sure why, but this is one of Kellerman's books that I read over and over again. Maybe it's because the POV isn't strictly A Delaware's, nor M Sturgis's. But that of a runaway boy, and a female detective. I would have loved it if Kellerman had done a sequel to Billy Straight as an adult, and Det. Connor's working on a case with or for him.

I've read quite a bit of both of the Kellermans. Three fourths of this book I really didn't care for. The last quarter was a bit better It ended ok and I was glad the kid is doing well. Maybe I'll check out the next in series
