Catching Air: A Novel

4 out of 5

543 global ratings

A vibrant, compulsively readable novel about two married couples who pursue a dream to open a bed-and-breakfast in small-town Vermont, from the internationally bestselling author of Perfect Neighbors and The Wife Between Us.

In her previous works including The Best of Us, “rising star” (Library Journal) Sarah Pekkanen captivated readers by penning “refreshingly introspective, sharply realistic, and tenderly humorous” novels (Booklist) that had readers “flying through the pages” (Hoda Kotb, Today show). Now, in Catching Air, Pekkanen turns an unflinching eye on the tangled relationships of two pairs of thirty-somethings.

A chance to run a B&B in snowy, remote Vermont—it’s an offer Kira Danner can’t resist after six soul-crushing years of working as a lawyer in Florida. As Kira and her husband, Peter, step into a brand new life, she quells her fears about living with the B&B’s co-owners: Peter’s sexy, irresponsible brother Rand, and Rand’s wife, Alyssa…who is essentially a stranger.

For her part, Alyssa sees taking over the B&B as the latest in a string of adventures. Plus, a quiet place might help her recover from the news that she can’t bear children. But the idyllic town proves to be anything but serene: Within weeks, the sisters-in-law are scrambling to prepare for their first big booking—a winter wedding—and soon a shy, mysterious woman comes to work for them. Dawn Zukoski is hiding something; that much is clear. But what the sisters-in-law don't realize is that Dawn is also hiding from someone…

Relatable and dynamic, Catching Air delves deeply into the vital relationships that give shape to women’s lives.

This book was very good and it moved quickly. Not too much "filler" in it. It was a good and moving book. I have read all of Sarah Pekkanen's books and enjoy the way that she writes.

This novel grabbed me from the beginning. The characters are all so interesting to see how they all come to blend, although from different walks of life. It was like watching lives unfold before your eyes. How changes sometime are for the best and also how people can be there for you when you need them. I just want to go to that B&B and stay there , meet all of them and sit and have a cup of tea while it snows out !!! Will most definitely read this author again , wish she'd write more and more about all these people so we can follow up on their lives Remember they say be careful what you wish for, you may get it !!!! Don't pass this one up you'll be sorry, grab it !!!.

Sarah Pekkanen Hits it Out of the Park Again!

My favorite thing about Sarah's books is the way they sweep you away into another world. Who hasn't thought about chucking it all and opening up a B&B in a beautiful place like Vermont? There are always such lush and lovely sensory details in her books, too. People cook and eat marvelous food. They wear beautiful clothes. They move to gorgeous locations.

Take this idyllic setting and add in a bunch of new and old family drama, an unexpected surprise in a marriage that suddenly seems to be tottering on wobbly legs, a stranger with a secret past, a Bridezilla whose wedding can make or break the new business -- all these elements come together into a wonderful read that wraps up in a moving and satisfying way. Tuck it into your beachbag this summer.

Great follow up to the Best of Us

Two couples move to Vermont to open a bed and breakfast. The two brothers and sisters-in-laws learn much about each other as they take on the venture. A stranger, Dawn, shows up at the B&B with secrets of her own and that unravel as the novel moves forward. A great story about how love, relationships, and the memories of our childhood shape our lives every day. I must say that the food served at the B&B in this novel gave me a constant urge to eat, because everything Kira served up sounded delicious. Great novel to follow The Best of Us.

Interesting story line; not that well written. Two brothers and their wives open a B & B in the North, and a young woman who was running from a scary boyfriend played a part. The story seemed to jump around a bit but that may just that i wasn't focused enough. None of the characters seemed real and yet I could tell that the author tried to make them so. The descriptions of the B & B were pleasant and well done. It would make a good beach book for this summer.

Fun, Easy Read.

This one was an easy read that I found quite enjoyable. I liked the idea of the B&B and the gal who was a good cook and reading about her interesting and delicious sounding recipes and foods that she served. A stranger comes into the mix also and creates another diversion. It was fun! Held my interest and read it in three days! A fun summer read...

I thought by the end it seemed a bit light from the way it started. To me it seemed to end too quickly. Overall a decent read.

I like the character development and the basis of the story. I wish there was a bit more description of the Vermont area and the B & B it self. I would love to be a B & B owner but I dont think it is as easy as the book portrayed. Good book all in all though.

While the storyline is thought-provoking and well written, there is no ending to this book. The plot carefully follows three women and details their quirks and lives, yet at the end of the book none of their issues are addressed or solved.

Amusing, but not what I was hoping for

Catching Air was described as a story about two couples who open a bed and breakfast in Vermont, but it was more about their inability to reproduce then the stresses of the new business venture. After reading and really liking the author's The Best Of Us, I expected the same strong characters and realistic dialog to showcase the issues of normal people. Although present, those writing traits were overshadowed by the personal problems of these two unhappy couples, which were a bit depressing.

I wouldn't have read this had the description been, well, honest. I wasn't interested in reading a book where the main characters struggle to conceive and then stress over whether or not they would be good parents. I wanted there to be more issues with running the hotel, but those were few and far between. Dawn, the accidental thief who hid out at the bed and breakfast was a weird character with an equally odd background. Although her arrival and attempt to escape the police was intended to heighten the suspense, it didn't. I was further disappointed when the big arch in the plot was obvious from the beginning.

This was amusing, but not what I was hoping for.
