First and foremost I understand why people prefer the short story over the movies because this short story was frightening & NOTHING like hour the movies portrayed.

Children of the Corn was not a short story I expected to be so taken by, especially considering the almost dated relationship between Vicky and Burt. However, as the pages continued to flow I found myself growing more entranced by the concept, characters, and He Who Walks Behind The Rows.
This is a must-read if you're looking for a horror story that's short, concise, and scratches that eldritch itch you've been having.

I had yet to read Stephen King so I found this short and decided to give it a whirl.
Expertly written, highly suspenseful and left my heart racing while I held my breath. Good God I'm terrified to read a full novel of his.
Worth the read for sure and I'll have to brave a full novel....gulp. Who wants to hold my hand?? đ

Your quintessential King short story. Leaves enough to the imagination to wonder about the past and the future of that small town in Nebraska.

Quick, compressed, and the creep factor begins immediately!

I have read many of Stephen Kingâs novels, but I hate to say, in all my years of King reading, this was the first of his short stories Iâve ever read. I wasnât let down! The action begins almost immediately, with Burt and Vicky running down a teen who springs from the cornfield as they travel down a lonely Nebraska highway. Of course, it wasnât the car that wouldâve killed this poor, hapless creatureâŚâŚ
You get a sense and a feel for the characters right off the bat. An argumentative, unhappily-married couple whoâve lost the luster in a short time. For someone whoâs been happily married for decades, King always does a fine job writing frustrated men who seem ready for their wives to keel over at anytime. I havenât seen the movie version since I was a kid, so there was no Peter Horton or Linda Hamilton in my brain as I read this. I envisioned two different people, completely divorced from a film representation.
I wonât give spoilers (I must say this in every review I write), and I havenât seen the movie in a LONG time (Iâll have to check it out soon), but I donât think the story ends quite the same way.
Creepy kids, rows of corn (Kingâs description of the stalks, the wind, and smells of the crop) bring it all alive as if youâre there), and religion-gone-wrong. A great read.
Iâm about to re-read Carrie for the first time in years, and with so much of Kingâs work out there, I feel like it will take the rest of my life to make a dent in his bibliography.

I read this in anticipation of watching some of the movies this October. The simple story (a couple in a dying marriage find a body in a Nebraska ghost town and have to face a spooky group of killers) hints at rich depth - who are these killers? What happened to empty the town? What happens next? I have recently read books that felt sloppy or unfinished, but in this tight little adventure, I find myself convinced that King could have done 200 pages of world-building and still found this little capsule to be playing fair in that world. Looking forward to the movies!

It was decent for a short story. Obviously, the story was a little thin, but you'd have to expect that for a short story. It was fairly interesting though!

Not as scary as the movie. But was fun to read. More creepy then scary. It's a fine place to start with king it's in his short story collection night shift and that a good collection to start with.
