Circe

This #1 New York Times bestseller is a "bold and subversive retelling of the goddess's story" that brilliantly reimagines the life of Circe, formidable sorceress of The Odyssey (Alexandra Alter, TheNew York Times).

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child -- not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power -- the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man's world.

Foolish Mortals

Y'all, there is nothing wrong with the manufacture of this book. There is nothing wrong with the pages. It was printed to feel vintage. Go to a library and you'll find hundreds of books printed in a similar style. Bc, you know, in olden times it wasn't possible to cut book pages precisely. And every now and then a publisher will print a story that feels too historical to be laser printed like every other unimportant mass market book. The pages aren't smooth in texture for the exact same reason. So reviews that complain about the pages being uneven, well, they just sound uneducated. This book is phenomenal. I have loved every minute. The protagonist's speech pattern takes a minute to get used to, but she's ancient. She isn't supposed to speak with a modern vocabulary. 10/10 would recommend.

The story of Circe in the Odyssey is well known. Did we know her childhood? Did we know her struggles? Did we know her heart? No, not until now. The Song of Achilles and Circe are amazing books. Ms. Miller has shown herself to be an outstanding storyteller. Now, to read Galatea.

Beautiful characters and prose. I had never thought what the lives of the gods must be like before. How satisfying to have someone else imagine it.

I saw this book in a video and it immediately caught my attention, I had to get it. It just came in and has some smudges on the cover (her face) but is a beautiful cover and I am loving the story so far. I have a feeling this will be one of my favorite books, which will make Madeline Miller one of my favorite authors. This is the first novel I’ve read of hers and it certainly will not be the last. I def recommend Circe.

First I bought and was blown away by Song of Achilles...then I bought this and felt the same way. Excellent writer, excellent read. However Amazon could do a better job, the words were printed so light, I strained my eyes to read even with adequate light and with my glasses on. I am asking the company to please be mindful of using enough ink so text will be sustainable and legible.

A new take on a classic myth

Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2024

I’ve always loved Greek mythology—the gods, the heroes, the monsters…all of it. This book included a little of everything and spans centuries, focused solely on Circe’s story.

Naturally, there are a plethora of gods mentioned throughout, but other familiar names from mythology are featured too. Scylla, Daedalus, Icarus, and Odysseus to name a few.

As the main character, Circe is incredibly naïve when it comes to her interactions with the other gods, despite the fact that she is a daughter of Helios and grew up in his court. Her younger siblings were adept at understanding the strange nuances of the other gods, and it baffled me that she wasn’t. She was the eldest, she was raised just as they were, and she witnessed many of the same events growing up. I had a tough time trying to figure out why Circe was so clueless about pretty much everything when compared to her siblings. It didn’t make much sense.

But that aside, I enjoyed the story and the references to classic myths sprinkled throughout. I also liked how Circe evolved through the story; she finally began to understand the nature of the gods and her own unusual brand of divinity, and slowly started to take control of her life, to undo some of the wrongs she felt she had committed.

If you’re a fan of Greek mythology, I definitely recommend reading Circe.

Not My Genre

Let me first say that I think Madeline Miller is a wonderful writer. Her writing plowed me through this book which I read because it was a book club selection. Mythology and the Greek gods hold little interest for me, so I didn't find the story particularly compelling, but if this is a genre you enjoy, you will love this book.

Interesting telling of a Titan

First, the performance was great, read and listened between the Kindle and Audible.. I really enjoyed how the reader read the story. Her scent added to the full enjoyment of the story. I would listen to more done by this reader.

If I knew more about the Titans and Olympians I probably would have enjoyed a lot more. Not knowing all the characters made it a little hard for me to follow as most were just side characters. They were important enough that I wish I understood more of the powers. Although, I got so I really enjoyed Circle and her descriptions of the Gods and their attitudes. I did know Athena and Hermes, so that did help really pull me into the story.

I recognized a lot of the stories that were used. But they also were not sharp enough for me to compare or have real feelings about. It was fun to read about a Titan and to see what was offered.

I have and I would recommend this book. There is some sex and what could be some trigger scenes of abuse. A lot happens but this book is not action packed.
