From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson comes the final book in the Skyward series--an epic story about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction, now in paperback!

Spensa has made it out of the Nowhere, but what she saw in the space between the stars has changed her forever. She came face to face with the Delvers, and finally got answers to the questions she’s had about her own strange Cytonic gifts.

The Superiority didn’t stop in its fight for galactic dominance while she was gone, though. Spensa’s team, Skyward Flight, was able to hold Winzik off, and even collect allies to help with the cause, but it’s only a matter of time until humanity—and the rest of the galaxy—falls.

Defeating them will require all the knowledge Spensa gathered while in the Nowhere. But being Cytonic is more complicated than she ever could have imagined. Now, Spensa must ask herself: How far is she willing to go for victory, if it means losing herself—and her friends—in the process?

The final book in the Skyward series will free humanity, or see it fall forever.

Brandon Sanderson

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.

In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

High flying space action!

I stared at the cover of Skyward for 2 years before I finally bought it. It looked like something I’d like. I read it and the sequel Starsight immediately following. Bought Cytonic upon release thinking it was the last book of a trilogy. It was not. So I preordered Defiant. The final book of the series (or is it?). Got two pages in and realized the collection of short stories would be required reading. So I doubled back, read the Skyward Flight collection, and now have finished the entire series. Except the “Universe will continue in Skyward Legacy”. Which I’m glad. I thinks it’s a universe full of interesting stories.

The stories follow Spensa, the daughter of a disgraced fighter pilot. Her dream is to soar into the sky and defend her homeworld of Detritus from the alien Krell. She also may possess the “defect” that could destroy them all. The first book has a real Top Gun or Iron Eagle feel. It could also be reminiscent of How to Train Your Dragon now that I think about it.

At first, I wasn’t sure I really liked Spensa. Or her spaceship AI, M-Bot. The universe she populated and the world building involved was really interesting, though, so I stuck with them. Technically, these are “young adult” novels (a definition I find almost meaningless). So maybe you can forgive an old guy for finding them a little annoying at first. I think the characters really hit their stride by the finale. The last two mainline novels really took Spensa through some splendid character growth. I hadn’t really realized how invested I’d gotten in the characters until I was getting choked up during the last few chapters of Defiant. I really liked the series. The mythology. The alien types. I really really want the kitsen to exist. I literally just ordered a Kitsen plushie from DragonSteel books. Overall, Skyward is a fast paced action adventure scifi buddy story. It does what it set out to do: tell a ripping yarn!

Brandon Sanderson is truly a gifted author. Love this series (although book #3 is a bit tough, as so much is going on). I've enjoyed the series, my husband has enjoyed the series, and I purchased the series for my 13-year-old granddaughter (who loves it, too). It's really great that the "hero" is female, and steps up to the many challenges she faces. Along her journey, she experiences quite a bit of growth socially and emotionally, too.

I enjoy reading fantasy and sci-fi fantasy books and Book 4 of the Skyward series was thoroughly enjoyable. I am looking forward to Skyward Legacy and the continuing adventures of Spensa Nightshade.

This book did a nice job of tying the other books together. The ending felt a little anti-climatic, but overall the book had good pacing and was a fun read
