The Housemaid's Secret

“Don’t go in the guest bedroom.” A shadow falls on Douglas Garrick’s face as he touches the door with his fingertips. “My wife… she’s very ill.” As he continues showing me their incredible penthouse apartment, I have a terrible feeling about the woman behind closed doors. But I can’t risk losing this job—not if I want to keep my darkest secret safe…

It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want.

It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything…

That’s when I make a promise. After all, I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe.

Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go…

This absolutely explosive and shockingly twisty sequel to international phenomenon and New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller The Housemaid will keep you racing through the pages late into the night. Anyone who loves The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose, The Woman in the Window and Gone Girl will be totally hooked!

This book can also be enjoyed as a standalone.

I am happy to provide the requested book review from the author on p.328 of the Housemaid's Secret. This best selling author lives up to her reputation in providing a rivetting and recreative suspense and thrilling novel. Her profesional life has provided her with creative thought process she may well have difficulty controlling in real life. There appears to be a dark side you might or might not want ot experience. I look forward to reading The Housemaid is Watching. No telling what other secrets might show up behind closed doors.

Twist upon twist

I loved the first book, The Housemaid, and was eager to read more. This book did not disappoint. It is NOT just another retelling of the first book with different clients. It is a whole new story with new twists and turns. When you finally find out one of the major plot twists, you still have another few chapters left to see how it will resolve, and it doesn't go the way you'd think. (I will not spoil the twists for you.) Witty and well written. This is only my second book by Freida McFadden, but I am now a fan, and have added more of her books to my Kindle to read. I'm grateful that she doesn't describe intimate situations in graphic detail (at least in her Housemaid series so far). She only alludes to it in most cases and leaves the details to the imagination. She isn't relying on the "spice" to sell the book, the story does that for her.

I really enjoyed The Housemaid’s Secret! It was great fun. The characters are all well developed and lots of fun, and some are depraved. Lots of twists and turns which really kept my interest. I had a difficult time putting it down. The suspense was intense at times while followed by some fun humor which popped up regularly. It ended with a delightful twist and a fun HEA! I heartily recommend it.

Fast, addictive

I’ve been in a reading slump for some time now and decided to pick up the housemaid. I read it in two days and immediately ordered the second one and it was just as addicting as the first! I couldn’t put it down. If you’re someone who likes playing detective and predicting plot twists, you will love this series. It’s fast, interesting, and has some wild turns! There is a love interest for those who prefer to have one, and some small character development. I haven’t read the third book yet but I will be soon. I’d like to see if Millie develops more as a character. These books are like crack!

Slammed thru this book too!

There's just something about this author and the way she does her writing. The way her storytelling has twists and turns in it that you think you figured it out but then she changes it and you're like oh wait a minute.

Spoiler

From the very beginning I had feelings that when he was going to be evil anyway. Because the way she talked and the way things were done it was just very sketch.

Poor Millie in trouble again and thankfully Enzo save the day. I didn't even think that her and Enzo were going to ever be together especially after the first book. But I'm glad that they resolved things and they realize that they were a good match for each other.

Enzo can be my hero any day.

What did I miss?

I don't know...maybe I read this too fast or I was too tired, but I cannot put together that the "murdered" Douglas/Russell isn't really dead. So how was that death reported to the police in the first place, since there relly wsn't a body. This happened at the apartment, right? BUT the real Douglas was murdered at their house. ??? So how could Wendy report this to the police and blame it on Millie? Millie wasn't at their house at any time when the murder of Douglas was commited. I understand the switching and role playing, but I can't make the link happen in my head. Don't get me wrong...I loved the book and am planning to read #3 very soon.

Millie goes for more! Excellent sequel!

Once we’ve moved on from the first jaw dropping off part, when it comes to book #2, there’s character development and McFadden explored Millie’s life and relationships.

However, when this was supposed to provide the MC with depth, it fails its purpose as it’s confuse and the relationship is completely unbelievable. Millie is gorgeous but I don’t find her relationship neither true nor passionate enough so as to buy it.

Moving on to the plot, this time Millie will deal with another woman in trouble and won’t be able to resist her urges to do something about it. Will she make it?

Even when there’s a lot invested in this book, it doesn’t make it to jaw dropping. So, go for it, it’s a good book but don’t expect to find yourself mesmerized as in book #1.

SPOILER review! TW: Almost Sa, Eating Disorder, Fat Phobic Remarks

Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2024

My review below does mention briefly about some spoilers, trigger warning wise this one has a almost SA scene, fat phobic remarks, and eating disorders. I may have missed a few trigger warnings, if you’re interested in reading please google all trigger warnings.

I put off reading this for a while because a lot of people were saying that the second book is better then the first and I have to say that I disagree, Millie’s character in The Housemaids secret isn’t as interesting as in The Housemaid. She came off as annoying at times and I just didn’t care for her character in this book. I didn’t really enjoy any other character other then Enzo, Enzo is my all time favorite character from this series, I’m glad he was brought back and I’m happy we are going to be getting more Enzo content in The Housemaid is watching.

Something’s that annoyed me about this book is the repetitive way in which Millie says she being watched, I think it pops up like six times, surely their is another way you can say she feels she being watched or show that she is being watched. There are some trigger warnings for this one, a scene where Millie is almost Sa leads to an officer implying that it was because of the way she was dressed (pg 69) during part two of the book there is fat phobic comments and eating disorders.

The romance with Brock feels a little unnecessary until the end but the way that Millie was leading him on all while knowing that she wasn’t ready for more and still loved Enzo is one of the reasons I didn’t particularly like her, Enzo leaves to take care of his mother who had declining health and Millie states multiple times that she is mad that he left but it’s literally his only family.

The mystery/thrilling bits are different from the first story but at the same time they are still kind of similar, the mystery in general while interesting just wasn’t as hard hitting as the first book, I think I was just expecting a bit more after hearing so many comments about this book, Im hoping Millie’s character gets redeemed for me in the third book but at least I’ll get some more Enzo content. I hope we get some chapters from his perspective.
