The Langoliers

4.6 out of 5

Stephen King’s unforgettable novella—first included in his 1990, award-winning collection Four Past Midnight and made into a highly acclaimed miniseries—about a terrifying plane ride into a most unfriendly sky.

On a cross-country, redeye flight from Los Angeles to Boston, ten passengers awaken in Bangor, Maine, to find that the crew and most of their fellow passengers have disappeared. The airport shows no signs of life. Yet they hear “radio static” in the distance. Craig Toomey, an irritable investment banker on the verge of a breakdown, believes it is “The Langoliers,” monsters he was afraid of as a child who attack those who waste time. It’s mystery author Bob Jenkins who first theorizes that they have flown through a time rip. Bob declares they have entered a place that forbids time travelers to observe or interfere with past events. It turns out that Craig is right, in a way. Two creatures, followed by hundreds more, emerge from the forest and head for the plane, consuming everything in their path. Can the survivors manage to fly the plane back to Los Angeles, back to the correct time, before The Langoliers succeed in their deadly mission to destroy the plane and the world? Dinah Bellman, the young blind girl whose aunt did not survive the time rip, has the greatest insight of all.

A spine-tingling, propulsive novella, The Langoliers is a brilliant read from the masterful Stephen King.

I'm a huge King fan and am working to read our and re read all of his books. While this one isn't known to be one of his best works, I think it's a really unique story concept and is a short and easy read.

I read this back in 1990 when it first came out. It was great then and still is. Maybe I will read it again in 10 years. It took a lot of imagination to write this story and I thoroughly enjoyed it again.

I really love this book. Even though I've seen the movie, I can't really recall it. I must watch the movie again. Overall, the book is very intense because I already have issues about flying on airplanes and this book made it even worse. To wake up with no one on board with only a few people that was left behind and to somehow find a solution to get back is a ride out of hell, especially with the langoliers coming after you is a huge no no, get me the hell back and away from those things. I couldn't set the book down for a moment, it's that good. One character I didn't like and another character I did like. Won't put spoilers on here so I suggest you give it a shot and you'll enjoy Stephen King's airplane adventure.

Quite a Predicament

"The Langoliers" by Stephen King is a gripping novella that masterfully blends suspense and science fiction, transporting readers into a chilling scenario aboard a cross-country flight. As the passengers awaken mid-flight to discover that the crew and most of their fellow travelers have vanished, they find themselves stranded at an eerily deserted airport in Bangor, Maine. The tension escalates when investment banker Craig Toomey, plagued by anxiety and memories of childhood fears, connects the disappearance to his belief in the terrifying "Langoliers"—monsters that consume the past and leave nothing in their wake.

As the survivors piece together their predicament, mystery author Bob Jenkins proposes a daring theory: they have accidentally flown through a time rip, entering a realm that forbids time travelers from observing or interfering with past events. With time against them and nightmarish creatures emerging from the forest, the group must race to commandeer the plane and return to Los Angeles before being devoured by the Langoliers. King's trademark tension and imagination shine through in this spine-tingling tale, exploring themes of time, loss, and survival. "The Langoliers" is a captivating read that reinforces King's status as a master storyteller, leaving readers on the edge of their seats as they navigate the unsettling boundaries of time and reality.

This is quite a fascinating sci fi thriller. As I read it I felt like I was there with the characters and experiencing the same emotions as them. It takes a bit of time to settle into the story but once it gets going hold on. I kept wondering what the twist would be and it wasn’t what I expected at all.
