What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?

After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvyā€™s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. Itā€™s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy canā€™t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvyā€™s murder for the showā€™s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friendā€™s murder, even if she is the one that did it.

The truth is out there, if we just listen.

Amy Tintera

Amy Tintera

Amy Tintera started writing novels as a kid during her middle school science classes, which probably explains why she has always been very bad at science. She is now the author of several novels for young adults, including Reboot, a Kids Indie Next pick and YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, the Ruined series, The Q, and All These Monsters, a YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection.

She has degrees in journalism and film, and worked as a talent agency assistant in Hollywood before becoming an author. Raised in Austin, Texas, she frequently sets her novels in the Lone Star state, but she now lives in Los Angeles, where there's far less humidity, but not nearly enough Tex-Mex.

Listen for the Lie, her first novel for adults, will be published March 5, 2024 by Celadon/Macmillan.

āš”ļøwhodunit āš”ļøtrue crime podcast āš”ļøsmall town murder āš”ļølost memories

You guys Iā€™m so excited to talk about my favorite book of the year šŸ˜šŸ˜!!!!

This is a classic whodunit thriller. Lucy is found one morning covered in her murdered, best friendā€™s blood. Of course, Lucy has no memory of what happened and everyone thinks Lucy is the murderer. Five years later, a true crime podcast puts the murder in the spotlight again, and Lucy returns home to finally see if she can remember that tragic night . . .and to see if she is exactly what everyone thinks she is.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning. Every few chapters I had a new theory as to what happened. I was so enthralled I finished this in 24 hours! Quite a feat with two toddlers lol.

I will say, I listened to most of this on Audible bc I was driving home from vacation. Due to the podcast aspect of the story, I think the audio book is the best way to go. Iā€™m shocked Iā€™m saying that, but this audio was really good.

Whatā€™s your favorite book of the year? #thriller

I liked the style of this book. The podcast episodes vs the book and the story was interesting and creative. I laughed out loud in quite a few parts and just really enjoyed the story. The audible version is excellent and highly recommend folks read this with audio.

A total page turner!

This is the third podcast themed mystery I have read and it was BY FAR the best one. A million times better than ā€œAll The Dangerous Thingsā€ & ā€œNone Of This Is Trueā€. With that said, if you happened to like those titles you will absolutely love Listen For The Lie. Our MC Lucy, is accused of murdering her best friend but she has no memory of the night of the murder as she herself had significant head injuries. After podcaster, Ben, picks the cold case for his podcast, Lucy is forced to return home and begins to put the pieces together. Lucy has such a sarcastic, no nonsense personality and because of that I instantly liked her even though the whole town hates her. It was exciting, gripping and a total page turner. Loved it!

A favorite of 2024!

Lucy is living in LA when she is fired from her job. She also knows her current relationship must come to an end. She sees no future with him. She knows the main reason is that finally, her past has come back to haunt her.

In her small hometown in Texas, everyone believes she killed her best friend Savvy. She was found with Savvy's blood but Lucy has absolutely no memory of the event. The local police were unable to prove she killed Savvy. After, Savvy's death Lucy divorces her husband and she moves away to begin a new life.

Now, a podcast called Listen to the Lie by Ben Owens is bringing it all back.

When her grandmother calls and tells her to return to Texas for her birthday, Lucy can't say no. Her grandmother has been the one person who has always believed in her. When she arrives, her grandmother convinces her to talk to Ben. At first, Lucy doesn't want anything to do with the podcast but she is done running. She wants the truth to come out even if the truth is that she is the one responsible for Savvy's death.

Listen for the Lie had a great female character. Lucy was extremely likable because she felt real. She didn't show as a damaged drunk or addicted to some type of drug like many of the other female characters in so many plots lately. I liked that we didn't know if she was guilty because she didn't remember it either. We were constantly guessing about the culprit. I did guess who it was but not from the start.

I want to read whatever is next for Amy Tintera.

Cliffhanger: No

Enjoyable, well written, believable dialogue. The mystery captivated me to a certain point. I wasn't on the edge of my seat most of the time, but that was ok. I really liked the audiobook - both the narrator and the format (switching between book chapters and podcast episodes). One review I read mentioned that the reviewer found the intro/outro music to the podcasts irksome, it was the opposite for me. Felt like a real podcast. (It was no Serial, but what is? šŸ˜‰) Overall happy I used my Audible credit on this šŸ‘šŸ»

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera 4/5 āļø

Lucy Chase may have forgotten Plumpton but Plumpton has not forgotten her. It is hard to ignore the girl who supposedly murdered her best friend but does not remember anything. Savvy Harper was the townā€™s sweetheart and a charmer, especially with the men. Lucy and Savvy were inseparable so everyone was shocked when Lucy was found roaming the streets covered in Savvyā€™s blood. Five years have passed since that horrible night and Lucy has moved on to start fresh in LA.

When a family event brings Lucy home, she is forced to face the past. Not only does she have to answer to the town, but Ben Owens, a famous true-crime podcaster shows up and has questions for Lucy. Lucy has never spoken to anyone or given an interview until now. She decides to help Ben with his podcast ā€œListen for the Lieā€ and solve Savvyā€™s murder once and for all. Even if this means she could be the one who did it.

Listen for the Lie was a fast-paced, twisty mystery that I could not put down. The writing format alternated among real-time, flashbacks and Benā€™s podcasts. The best part of this compelling thriller was its dark humor. Also, Lucy is a phenomenal character with her sass and sense of humor. She is a hot mess but her quick wit and sarcasm make her very likable. I have a few complaints about this book. The first one is the amnesia trope is overdone! And the second one is Lucyā€™s family is appalling; everyone except her grandmother. Lastly, I have so many questions about the ending. Lucy makes a very vague statement that leaves me bewildered. I like mysteries wrapped up neatly with a bow.
