NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel comes a powerful, sweeping historical novel about a courageous woman in World War II Germany.

Sophia Alexander, the beautiful daughter of a famous surgeon in Berlin, has had to grow up faster than most young women. When her mother falls ill, Sophia must take charge of her younger sister, Theresa, and look after her father and the household, while also volunteering at his hospital after school. Meanwhile, Hitler’s rise to power and the violence in her very own town have Sophia concerned, but only her mother is willing to share her fears openly.

After tragedy strikes and her mother dies, Sophia becomes increasingly involved in the resistance, attending meetings of dissidents and helping however she can. Circumstances become increasingly dangerous and personal when Sophia assists her sister’s daring escape from Germany, as Theresa flees with her young husband and his family. Her father also begins to resist the regime, secretly healing those hiding from persecution, only to have his hospital burned to the ground. When he is arrested and sent to a concentration camp, Sophia is truly on her own, but more determined than ever to help.

While working as a nurse with the convent nuns, the Sisters of Mercy, Sophia continues her harrowing efforts to transport Jewish children to safety and finds herself under surveillance. As the political tensions rise and the brutal oppression continues, Sophia is undeterred, risking it all, even her own freedom, as she rises to the challenge of helping those in need—no matter the cost.

In Only the Brave, Danielle Steel vividly captures the devastating effects of war alongside beautiful moments of compassion and courage.

A poignant tale of survival and perseverance from the queen of women's fiction! Danielle Steel always delivers a story that takes her reader on a journey that makes us feel like we are living the angst right beside her characters. I know the minute I turn the first page of a new book that I will be quickly swept up into the story and will be hesitant to set the book down to atone with life's demands. ONLY THE BRAVE is no different. While the heroine suffers great injustice and showcases the inhumanity, she still manages to tell her story in a powerful way that connects the reader to the direness of what is happening. Very well told and easily connectible.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a dramatic spin on historical women's fiction that is light in romance but strong in a powerful female lead who tackles life with strength and dignity.

As always, wonderful read!

Her books are always so wonderful to read. They are like revisiting an old friend. You pick one up and you just settle in. I haven’t read one of her books in quite a while and after reading Only The Brave I can not understand why I waited so long. In the future you will see all the ones I have missed popping up in my Goodreads list. If you take the time to read this you will not be disappointed but you will be surprised when all of a sudden the end is there and you are just not quite ready for it to be over.

I love all things Danielle Steel and this does not disappoint!! This is historical fiction taking place in the WWII era. Sofia's mother is ill and dies, so she must help care for her younger sister Theresa. Their Father is a doctor, and owns his own private hospital. As the war starts and they are rounding up the Jewish people, some don't believe harm will come. Sophia attends resistance meetings, she helps Jewish children to safety; along with her sister and husband to sneak into Switzerland. Sophia becomes a nurse and joins the convent. Her Father is arrested, and the Germans burn his hospital and house to the ground. Sophia is arrested by association, and is sent to a concentration camp. Who can survive? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward as to what is next from Ms. Steel!!

Disturbing Times

So revealing and interesting - reading what it was like in Germany when the Nazis took over. Told from the point of view of a young German woman. Neighbors and friends being taken away because they were Jewish or part Jewish. People not allowed to run businesses. So heartbreaking. And unbelievable that it could happen. Sophia is sent to a concentration camp and escapes. She is a dedicated nurse and nun and saves children who are homeless. She and many other German s did not agree with Hitler's crazy regime. Powerful and factual.

I definitely liked the story. A little too much history, but it made a full circle. Loved the ending, but it seemed too long to get there.

The book had a lot of potential but was a bit disjointed and inconsistent.
