A violent jailbreak bleeds into a street fair in Wisconsin. In the wake of the carnage, a getaway van barrels down a rural highway. Inside are two men with a tenuous bond: an obsession with pain.

One is Paul Offenbach, a sadistic crime boss with a life-threatening bullet wound. The other is his hostage, Dr. Stuart Collier, now faced with a harrowing ethical quandary. Mile by mile, as a calculated battle of wills and wits plays out, the killer plots his next move. So does the doctor, sworn to do no harm but desperate to escape.

From internationally bestselling master of suspense Jeffery Deaver comes The Pain Hunter, part of The Broken Doll collection, a series of interconnected short stories about killers and prey, justice and revenge, that can be read or listened to in a single breathless experience.

...between giving this four or five stars. What's there is great, but, as Deaver makes clear, it's merely a part of a greater whole. Looking forward to reading the rest.

An injured felon - gunshot would to the leg - in the back of a van with a hostage who happens to be a doctor. An interesting conversation while the gunshot wound is being treated. But who comes out alive?

I really liked the stories that came together. It kept my attention throughout the book. I didn't want to put it down. I have not found a book of Mr. Dealers that I didn't like, even though I prefer the Lincoln Ryhme books.

Like others, I couldn't decide if this was a 4 or 5 Star, but I finally settled on 4.

Whichever it is, it is a roaring page-burner with good, strong characters, and a lot packed into a hour's reading. Mr. Deaver managed to work in several twists into this brief novella, and at the very end he either tossed in another subtle one or prompted me to invent my own. I can't wait to get to the others in the series.

I really enjoyed this quick story. The tension around how the doctor would make it out of the predicament was so good. I loved how he remained so calm and in control. He had me believing everything that he said. The plot twist towards the end made me smirk. I loved how the tables turned. The explanation of how it happened made for a satisfying ending.

The broken doll book 1. Short story. Pretty good but not a five. Denver has done better. Glad it was a short story. If he had made it longer, I may not have finished it, so I don’t think I will go on to book 2 of the broken doll….which has nothing to do with a doll!
