A USA TODAY Bestseller

“The Return of Ellie Black is a page-turning suspense novel, a shrewd character study, and a captivating mystery, all at the same time. The last fifty pages are magnetic. I couldn’t put it down until I’d experienced every last twist and turn.” —STEPHEN KING

Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s life is turned upside down when she gets the call Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington state—but Ellie’s reappearance leaves Chelsey with more questions than answers.

It’s been twenty years since Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s sister vanished when they were teenagers, and ever since she’s been searching: for signs, for closure, for other missing girls. But happy endings are rare in Chelsey’s line of work.

Then a glimmer: local teenager Ellie Black, who disappeared without a trace two years earlier, has been found alive in the woods of Washington State.

But something is not right with Ellie. She won’t say where she’s been, or who she’s protecting, and it’s up to Chelsey to find the answers. She needs to get to the bottom of what happened to Ellie: for herself, and for the memory of her sister, but mostly for the next girl who could be taken—and who, unlike Ellie, might never return.

The debut thriller from New York Times bestselling author Emiko Jean, The Return of Ellie Black is both a feminist tour de force about the embers of hope that burn in the aftermath of tragedy and a twisty page-turner that will shock and surprise you right up until the final page.

Didn’t See Those Twists Coming

I’d actually rate this book 4.5 Stars.

The twists were really good and I definitely didn’t see the one coming.

One day Ellie Black returns just as fast as she disappeared. Ellie has been missing for 2 years and now Detective Chelsey, is trying to figure out where she’s been, what happened to her, why she won’t open up, and how she was found unscathed. Is Ellie connected to the dead girl they found 1 1/2 years ago?

✨Synopsis:

Detective Chelsea Calhoun receives a call that Ellie Black, who disappeared a few years ago, has been found in Washington’s woods. As Chelsea tries to figure out what happened, she has more questions about Ellie as well as the detective’s sister, who vanished some twenty years ago. Chelsea wants answers not just for those two but desires to prevent another girl from being taken.

✨My thoughts:

The novel felt slow at the start. But half way through, I was hooked and couldn’t put the book down. I had to know what the deal was with Ellie as well as Chelsey’s sister.

This one had me hooked and I read it in just a couple of days. The story has enough twists to keep you reading, but not so many as to be lost. I found myself just really wanting to know Ellie’s story. I hope to hear more from Detective Calhoun as well. Great read.

The Return Of Ellie Black

What I like about this book is that it keeps me wanting to get back to it to see what’s going to happen. It’s very sad to read about the girls and what happened to them. I’m glad that wasn’t glorified because it made it more realistic. The only unrealistic part was about the last quarter. It was a bit of a twist to read about what actually happened, but it was a stretch to find out who the bad people were. All in all it was a good book.

This book..:. Wow. I’d be shocked if anyone has predicted some of the jaw dropping parts of this book. I feel like I usually have theories lose or that end being partly true but not this book. There are parts I don’t even remotely see coming.

Ellie Black goes missing and 2 years later shows up in a wooded area. Chelsea is the detective that’s worked her case and is absolutely floored when she returns. So many things go wrong during the investigation and Chelsea cannot figure out what she’s missing. What she’s missing is absolutely mind blowing!

This thriller was so good. I couldn’t hardly put it down!

Page turning story

This book has a great plot, kept me turning the pages and engaged with the characters. However, I give it only 3 stars because I got so sick of the author’s incessant use of the phrase “she waits a beat then…”

There are other words. A moment, a second, she waits, she pauses, etc. The nonstop overuse of the phrase became grating.
