“Bursting with the magic of first love, it’s everything I want in a summer romance.” —Carley Fortune, #1 New York Times bestselling author of EVERY SUMMER AFTER

Beach Rules:

  • Do take long walks on the sand.
  • Do put an umbrella in every cocktail.
  • Do NOT run into your first love.

Sam’s life is on track. She has the perfect doctor fiancé, Jack (his strict routines are a good thing, really), a great job in Manhattan (unless they fire her), and is about to tour a wedding venue near her family’s Long Island beach house. Everything should go to plan, yet the minute she arrives, Sam senses something is off. Wyatt is here. Her Wyatt. But there’s no reason for a thirty-year-old engaged woman to feel panicked around the guy who broke her heart when she was seventeen. Right?

Yet being back at this beach, hearing notes from Wyatt’s guitar float across the night air from next door as if no time has passed—Sam’s memories come flooding back: the feel of Wyatt’s skin on hers, their nights in the treehouse, and the truth behind their split. Sam remembers who she used to be, and as Wyatt reenters her life their connection is as undeniable as it always was. She will have to make a choice.

Perfect beach or anywhere read

What a feel good, finding yourself, wacky family, escape from being stifled, rekindled first love joy this book was. I think I smiled for the entirety of reading this book, which wasn’t ling, because I flew through it. I liked the dual timeline, dual perspective approach to this book and I absolutely adored the quirky dynamics of Sam’s family and the sweetness of Wyatt’s embracing of that quirkiness. And man oh man, what a turd Jack was … I appreciated that he wasn’t an intentional villain but more just a dud. All around fabulous beach (or anywhere) read

Read if you enjoy:

  • Second Chances
  • Childhood Sweethearts
  • Beach House Neighbors
  • Closed Door Romance
  • Small Town Vibes

Same Time Next Summer is the story of two childhood friends that met on the shores of Long Island in their neighboring beach houses. Every summer, they would reunite and pick up right where they left off, evolving and falling in love in a summer bliss. This was a really easy story to jump into and I finished it in a day!

This story was similar to Love & Other Words and Every Summer After with the approach in format.

Things I loved:

  • Then and Now timelines with interchanging POVs (Sam and Wyatt)
  • Beach Vibes (It truly transported me)
  • Childhood memories and experiences

Things I didn’t enjoy: (Please STOP reading here if you don’t want a bit of a spoiler)

  • The finale seemed a bit underwhelming. I was hoping for more!
  • I understand the mixed feelings in the present from Sam’s perspective, but she has a fiancé and continues to plan her wedding. To me, there was emotional cheating as she is hung on to Wyatt (that is my personal impression), to the point where even Wyatt points out to her the constant touching on her part. It was clear that her connection to Fiancé was not the best but the whole book has her engaged after 4 years of relationship.
  • The plot? How the relationship with Wyatt and her family are handled… just forgiven without further discussion?
  • I just didn’t feel the connection between Sam and Wyatt in the present. I feel the were both stuck in the past (her in her memories and Wyatt with his songs about her) but neither made an effort to look for each other in the 13 years they were separated.

This books has being enjoyed by many people. Please read their reviews to find a more positive spin as this may be right up your alley!

Great Summer Book!

This book was a great way to start off summer. The way Annabel Monaghan writes and describes the setting pulls you in. I felt at times like I was physically on the beach or in the ocean the way she would describe the details. I could have easily sat and read this jn one or two sittings.

This book felt similar to The Summer I Turned Pretty, Every Summer After and a little bit of The Summer of Broken Rules. There was second chance romance, childhood friends to lovers and a dual timeline and POV.

The heartbreak that occurred in the book between Sam and Wyatt was done so well it was almost hard to get through because it felt so real and raw. Both Sam and Wyatt you could really sympathize with so easily. They were the type of characters you were rooting for the whole time.

The only qualms I had was my distaste for any kind of emotion cheating, but that being said the way it was handled in the end I had no problems with. It did not have too much emotional drama which I liked. I also liked the talk Sam had with her dad about her situation (which I won’t spoil by going into things about her dad’s past you’ll have to read to find out!).

It is a fairly clean romance with only a couple closed door scenes with a little bit of implied intimacy but nothing too explicit.

Again it is similar to The Summer I Turned Pretty and Every Summer After with a childhood friends to lovers trope and a dual timeline. It also has a similar beach town feeling and family reunion as The Summer of Broken Rules. So if you enjoyed any of those books this is a great one to pick up this summer. If you’re like me and you liked Nora Goes Off Script but it wasn’t your favorite, I think you’ll enjoy this one a lot more. This will definitely be on my summer recommendations list-it has all the beachy feels!

I will forever love a story with a dual past and present timeline!!! Childhood friends to lovers + summer romance? I’m sold! The perfect book to read at the beach or just in summer!! While I overall really enjoyed (finished it in a day) I think I would’ve love to see a little more emotional turmoil between the two leads! Or maybe more tension between in the past and present!

3.5 Book club pick

This is the first book I've read by this author so I was not sure what to expect going in, especially because it was a book club pick and not something I picked up on my own. I didn't read the synopsis before starting, but very quickly picked up that it would be a second chance trope. Pretty early on all I could think was that this gave me Sweet Home Alabama vibes and I was so okay with that. I love a story that is told in past and present duel POV's so I was excited for that. I loved the summer house setting, and loved seeing how Wyatt and Sam became what they were to each other. For a good part of the story you do question why the MC's split up, and once it is reveled I will say that while I wasn't expecting it, and I could see why it caused problems especially to a 17 and 18 year olds. I did enjoy seeing them reconnect as adults, and was a tad concerned that we would stumble into the cheating trope or a love triangle, but we did not. I enjoyed (most) of the side characters, and really enjoyed seeing the growth of Sam, not only in a relationship, but with herself. While this one did end in a happy for now, there was no epilogue and for me I would have loved to see the couple together more as adults. I would recommend this one to lovers of a beachy settings, young love/heartbreak and anyone who is looking for a quick closed door romance. I will pick up more from this author in the future.
