The Stolen Throne (Dominions, 2)

My twin sister is the true queen of Aryd. She survives, hiding and clinging to life in the desert, while I reign as the false queen alongside the monstrous King Eidolon. There’s only one escape from this gilded prison: Reven. My Shadowraith. My heart. Only the shadows that he struggles to control are growing more sinister, more powerful.

It’s just a matter of time before they turn on him…and on me.

Even escape doesn't mean true freedom, though, when we're still on the run from Eidolon’s unstoppable armies. And when we discover there’s a traitor among us, I have no choice…I must become the queen I was never meant to be.

Because as one evil hunts me, the other loves me more than himself.

And my fate lies with both.

This is such a great book series, I just couldn't stop! The world building is out of this world the characters are mind blowing and you love them all and hate the ones your supposed to hate. I am so ready for the next one and can't wait to reread the first two to get ready for the third book.

Original, fast paced action but still got the slow burn romance. Meren is a very realistic character, not overly heroic but also brave. Her thoughts and actions seem so real. Only thing is she doesn’t think about Tabra enough in my opinion but that also makes her seem more realistic. I can’t wait for the next one.

So much backstory - I devoured it!

I read The Liar’s Crown, the first book in this series, just a couple months ago and fell in love with the world, characters, and story that Abigial Owen created. I’ve always loved a shadow daddy, and Reven is one of the best. The author noted in the Acknowledgments of "The Stolen Throne" that:

“Meren’s and Reven’s story started with a single kernel of an idea. An obscure Hans Christian Anderson fairytale about a man who shed his shadow, and when the shadow turned real, he took over the man’s life. I read that and knew I had both my hero and my villain.”

To take that and turn it into this full, complex world with layered characters is so amazing!

I’m always wary of a second book when I love the first SO much, but she’s done it again! I devoured this book from start to finish. It dives right into the action, is fast paced and gives so much. I think I loved it even more than the first book!

In "The Liar’s Crown," I was pulled in by the various characters secrets, interactions, and what drives them. In this second book, the character interactions continue to play an important part, but the action and plot really expand exponentially.

The reveals! There was never a dull moment and there were so many times I simply squealed at where the story took me. ~So much backstory you didn’t know you were missing. ~The Devourers, the amulets, where powers came from, how it’s all connected. ~The “pet” that comes along! 😍 ~The continued love triangle complications.

I enjoyed Meren in book one - her sass, her loyalty, her strength - but she continues to evolve in this second book and becomes so much more confident.

I’m no stranger to long chapters in fantasy books, but I really enjoyed how the book is segmented into shorter chapters because 1) It made it much easier to switch between audio and eBook and 2) It fulfilled my Type-A need to feel super productive and make so much progress each reading sesh! 😂

It’s YA/NA, so there’s a ton of tension building and some low-spice scenes. But the relationships, the love triangle, the friendships, and the STORY – how the plot progresses in this second book was so captivating!

It had me in tears by the end. I’m equally proud of and scared for Meren and her remaining journey. I can’t wait to see how it all comes to fruition in the final book, and it’s so painful to know I have to wait until April 2024!

An enthralling continuation of this epic fantasy

Phew this book. It was definitely a stay up too late, cannot put it down, it should get more than 5 stars kind of book. I loved the first book in this trilogy but I loved, loved this book even more. This beautifully crafted and expertly delivered epic fantasy novel will give you all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, knuckle biting, and cheering. Expect a roller coaster of a story because instead of a slow ratcheting up of the danger and suspense, this part of the story starts with intensity and just never lets up. The book picked up right where the first book left off. Meren and Reven, along with their loyal cohorts, are continuing to try to thwart the evil Eidolon, the immortal king of Tyndra’s, plans, heal her sister, and save the dominions. The majority of the main characters from the first book are again in this story and there are also some new characters who are introduced. The world building was superb, drawing from the last book and weaving in new threads as the story progresses and more dominions are visited and new characters are introduced. The story includes all the goodness that you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, end of the world scenarios, paranormal creatures, evil entities, henchmen, loyal friends and family, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, mystery, secrets, betrayal, revelations, and laughs. I love that Meren and Reven’s characters, despite their unique overwhelming powers and how the rest of the world views them, are still kind, self-deprecating, modest, reluctant, and at times resentful which makes them very likeable and relatable heroes. While this is a YA fantasy, is also a deeply emotional book. At its heart, it’s a story of damaged and bruised but not broken people who continue to find their way by owning their choices, recognizing their scars, finding their strength, embracing life, and deciding to answer the call to do what is right, even when it is hard. I cannot wait to read the conclusion of this trilogy.

I loved this book so much!!! Such a beautiful and magical story! I’m honestly shocked I don’t hear more people talking about it! The two main characters Meren and Reven are written perfectly… I’ve never read a book I loved as much as this one.

OMG ! This book was so much . I don't even know where to begin. First of all , I really hope that Tabra is healed and can help her sister in the next book. Eidolon is getting on my nerves. Abigail Owen has a great way of creating Villains that i can't stand. I always am like " when do we kick his butt?". I hated that there were traitors among the group and I loved that Reven and Meren had a moment to themselves. I noticed the spirits in the necklaces weren't doing very much. needless to say this book had me in my feelings. I am looking forward to the third book . They better get the rest of necklaces.

My heartbeat was irratic throughout this book. There was so much action in it. At times, the story slowed but I was always on edge, waiting for something awful to happen.

It's going to be hard to wait until April for the next book.

The bridge for book 3

Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2023

This book was not only the "bridge" for book 3 but also it's weaker than book 1. While in book 1, we have plenty of moments btw Raven and Maren - we had the opportunity to accompany the progress of their relationship and have plenty of moments btw them- Not the case in book 2: Raven's characters it's darker and we have the couple more time apart than together.

When we have a trilogy, sometimes book 2 is "the bridge" to the final book. This book is an example of this: the main couple had few little moments, more in the end of the book, and in my opinion not enough. Until there, we have "the typical drama to extend the story" for a book 3. Also, this book was bigger but way messier than book 1. We have more characters, more action yes but it was all very confusing for me. In a moment, we have them trying to find a cure for Tebra, then we have Eicholon's spirits running around, Raven's fights with his shadows, the group trying to find amulets, so jumping from place to place with a lot like a lot of obstacles in the way to the point i got lost and had to stop reading and think" where i was and what for" ⁉🤯

Positive points: i like Meren's pet (i can't remember the name of the creature who could shapeshift into a dog or a crow) probably my fav character in the entire book.

But then we have Eidolon's spies: we found one of them, but apparently there's more and Cain who doesn't give up of his love for Meren. I like the character but at the same time, i would prefer to see a smarter Cain, the best friend and not the puppy who are seeking for love in the wrong person.

I still love Meren's character, she's still the light of the story, But then, we have the ending. We have a very identical ending to the first book, but with Raven. Overall, i think this book is way heavier, darker and messier than book 1. I really don't know if i will read the following book 🤷‍♀️
