From a New York Times bestselling author, a guide to restoring good bacteria to your gut–and keeping our microbiomes happy and healthy.

Because of our highly processed diet, pesticides, and overuse of antibiotics, our guts are now missing so many of the good bacteria that we require to be healthy. As a result, many of us have lost control over our health, weight, mood, and even behavior.

With cutting-edge research, Dr. Davis connects the dots between gut health and modern ailments such as SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), a silent and profound epidemic, which affects one out of three people and is responsible for an astounding range of human health conditions.

Super Gut shows us how to fix your microbiome once and for all. It includes more than forty recipes, a diet plan, and resources so you can pinpoint your gut issues, correct them, and maintain your long-term health and well-being.

About the authors

William Davis

William Davis

Dr. Davis provides solutions to health problems by addressing the microbiome, massively disrupted in modern people. He shows readers in his Super Gut book, for instance, how to restore important lost microbes lost such as Lactobacillus reuteri, restored by using a unique method of yogurt fermentation that smooths skin and reduces wrinkles, restores youthful muscle and strength, deepens sleep, reduces appetite and provides many other youth-preserving and anti-aging effects. In Super Gut and in his website, www.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.com, he provides additional do-it-yourself-at-home strategies for benefits such as improved mood, improved athletic performance, better sleep, heightened immunity, and improved body composition.

Dr. William Davis is also responsible for exposing the incredible nutritional blunder made by "official" health agencies: Eat more "healthy whole grains." The wheat of today is different from the wheat of 1960, thanks to extensive genetics manipulations introduced to increase yield-per-acre. Eliminating wheat yields results beyond everyone's expectations: substantial weight loss, correction of cholesterol abnormalities, relief from inflammatory diseases like arthritis, better mood, reduced blood sugar with many type 2 diabetics being freed of insulin and other drugs, all articulated through his Wheat Belly series of books. He is also a champion of individual self-directed health, as discussed in his Undoctored book.

Dr. Davis lives what he preaches, not having indulged in a wheat-containing bagel, ciabatta, or pretzel in many years, while consuming various fermentation products that yield unexpected health benefits. Dr. Davis lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After seeing several podcasts on youtube with Dr. William Davis, I was determined to learn more about resetting your gut microbiome. I started my own homemade multistrain "joghurt" according to the recipe in the book. What a difference especially for a friend who has Irritable Bowel Syndrome. He experienced an immediate improvement within 8 hours. I would recommend this book to everybody with the goal to improve their guthealth and overall wellness!

Worked For Me!

I suffered from IBS my whole life. It was isolating and caused me difficulty at work because I had to travel and meet with clients. All of us in my family, from my grandmother on down, have struggled with IBS-like problems. Dr. Davis explains how a poor microbiome is often generational, since the biome is passed from mother to child during pregnancy and birth.

It took about six weeks for Dr. Davis's protocol to work. I've been at it for over four months now and my life has been fundamentally changed. I still avoid certain foods, but the list of what I can eat without distress has grown substantially. Dr. Davis recommends a half cup a day, but eat double that most days without any problem. There was a bit of healing crisis at first - some diarrhea and a bit of sniffles, but only about three days. It's a journey. I am milk intolerant, so used soy milk. For me, it is the best medium for the cultures - lots of protein and no added sugar.

Commercial yogurt never helped with the IBS at all, nor did probiotic capsules (though I do use them to start my ferments.) Dr. Davis mentions specific strains and it is best to order and use the ones he recommends. Long-fermented yogurt is quite sour (which I like); to sweeten it up a bit, though, I blend fresh fruit in a food processor and ferment for a couple of days on the counter in a mason jar, before refrigerating. I mix a couple of tablespoons of this blend into the yogurt when I eat it.

Very, very important to ferment the yogurt for 36 hours. I bought a yogurt maker on Amazon, called the Ultimate Probiotic Yogurt Maker for $60 that allows me to set temperature and time - check carefully because few yogurt makers provide for a 36 hour ferment. I chose the model with two large fermenting bowls. You can get the individual serving jars, but I make and eat so much, the larger bowls are best. I also bought a large Greek yogurt strainer because I like the thicker, Greek-style yogurt.

The protocol may not work for everyone, but for me, this has been a miracle.

Great, informative reading! I love learning things that show me how to put them to use in helping my body! Great recipes that make sense and go along with the teachings of the book. Should get it for that alone, but you will enjoy learning about the importance of probiotics and prebiotics, and be taught just what they are and what they do. Very interesting read!

Excellent Book, with lots of specific actionable information !

This is a Great Great book ! I've spent many years being interested in the microbiome in our gut, studying and searching for information. Yet most researchers, lectures, podcasts only give you very vague solutions. They'll say: Oh, it's very important, but just eat more fiber and take more probiotics. - Ya, Duhh. We already do that. But this is for a person who needs more detail. It is the first book I've seen where the author actually gives you very specific actionable plans for your gut microbiome. The beginning of the book might be a little boring where he goes on and on about SIBO too much, but skip forward and you'll find all of these wonderful topics: pg 24 he talks about Oxalobactor, a bacteria that breaks down Oxalates from spinach and almonds. pg 25 about Lactobacillus reuteri very important (type this name into YouTube). pg 30 Helicobactor pylori as a cause of autoimmune diseases, skin rashes, and Parkinson's. pg 68-69 he talks about how the gut affects Food Intolerances, and skin rashes. pg 101 about Curcumin, Berberine, Essential oils, pg 105 about how to suppress Candida. pg 179 where he explains that high insulin contributes to leaky gut. pg 185 details about wheat, gluten, and gliadin protein. Jump forward to his 4 week plan to kill off bad bacteria and replentish your good bacteria. pg 175 week 1, pg 195 week 2, pg 205 week 3, and pg 215 week 4. pg 220 is a section about what physical problems you may want to solve and which bacteria can help, such as: how to get deeper sleep, reduced stress, reduced inflammation, reduced anxiety and depression, and better mental focus. And how gut bacteria affect your mood. pg 227 about how to make L.reuteri Yogert, other yogurts, and many other recipes pg 293 all about companies that do stool testing. Appendix A: pg 297 resources to obtain specific strains of bacteria such as Lactobacillus reuteri, L.gasseri, L.longum, L.helveticus, L. casei, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, Bacillus coagulans. pg 304 covers many types of Yogurt makers. pg 313 Appendix C about how to eliminate Helicobactor pylori. I love this book. It is a great hand book for any person who wants to put a plan in to action.
