Trust: Knowing When to Give It, When to Withhold It, How to Earn It, and How to Fix It When It Gets Broken

4.8 out of 5

New York Times bestselling author, psychologist, and leadership expert Henry Cloud equips us to understand and manage trust for successful relationships through five foundational aspects.

Trust is the fuel for all of life. We are wired biologically, neurologically, emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically to trust. Trust is the currency that drives every relationship, beginning with the foundational bond between infants and their mothers, extending to the trust networks that undergird every human endeavor – art, science, commerce – and binding together every relationship we have ever had or ever will have. Nothing in our world works without trust.

It is tempting to think that trust is simple, that we should be able to spot a lack of trustworthiness relatively easily. But we all have our stories about misplaced trust. We either missed clear or subtle warning signs or there just were not any warning signs to see. Everything looked good on the surface, and maybe it was. But we got burned anyway.

And sometimes we struggle to earn and keep the trust of those around us when trust bonds fail to form or are broken. When trust breaks down, so does our ability to move forward.

Dr. Cloud explores the five foundational aspects of trust that must be present for any relationship to function successfully and helps us to understand how to implement them. He also guides us through the difficult process of repairing trust when it has been violated and broken, even when restoring trust feels impossible.

Rich with wisdom drawn from decades of experience in clinical practice, business consulting and research, Trust is the ultimate resource for managing this most complex and fundamental of human bonds, allowing us to experience more fruitful and rewarding relationships in every area of our lives.

What I most appreciate about this book is the mix of experience, science, and practical application.

I have read several of Dr. Cloud's books and always appreciate his wisdom.

What I most appreciate about this book is the mix of experience, science, and practical application. From the first chapter, I was already shifting ideas and processes in my brain. I really love how he shows the way to analyze why you are struggling with trust.

If you are someone who has struggled with trust or has had a chaotic/toxic background, I highly recommend reading this! It was truly life-changing.

Insightful

Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2023

This book has strong insight into the psychology of Trust and Forgiveness. It's great for anyone who wants to gain a conscious understanding of those.

Trust has many meanings: Trust =  Something/someone worth investing in through time, effort, love, energy, money, respect, or admiration.     Trust =  relying on the character, abilities, strength, and/or truth of someone/something.  Trust =  Believing someone is good, honest, reliable, safe/harmless.  Trust = someone/something that protects/guards what you value.

Trustworthy =  being someone others can depend on, someone who is dependable.   Trustworthy =  being someone who accepts criticism.          Trustworthy =  Being someone who can accept/admit being wrong and correct the mistake.  Trustworthy = Knowing someone's needs, desires, dreams, and what causes pain.  Then putting that into action.

Trust isn't about/for everything.   Trust means having the ability for a specific task/position.     Trust means being suitable for the task/position.

Trust is incremental and earned.  The amount of trust one has is the amount one has proven/demonstrated being worthy of.

Trust isn't the same as forgiveness.  Forgiveness means freeing yourself from the pain caused by others.   Without forgiveness you're tied to and trapped with those who hurt you. To forgive is to accept what has happened and know that it is finished, fully executed/discharged, paid in full, or reached its end.   Unforgiveness perpetuates the psychic damage caused by the untrustworthy and by betrayal.   Those who can't forgive can't imagine not being damaged or in pain.

Bible Passages and Unprocessed Religious Trauma

Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2024

The first ten pages of the book are well written. Unfortunately, I did not do my due diligence on the author, so at page 10 I put this book down and picked up Brene Brown’s book on shame resilience, Rising Strong.

I can quote a passage my parents used to shame me and break my trust in god, my family and society in general for each of the passages Dr Cloud quotes in those beginning pages. Until I can get past those issues, I am not going to be able to read this book and will have to find a different source on how to reestablish trust after having it destroyed so thoroughly.

Other reviews state this book is helpful to them, if you don’t have religious trauma, I encourage you to explore the book. If you do, I encourage you to stay away until you have had a chance to properly process it. In my lifetime of experiences, the most important lesson I have learned is that “god” has chosen some seriously flawed messengers so, choose which ones you follow to very very carefully.
