NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Danielle Steel delivers a poignant novel about a mother and daughter who must repair their relationship and find a way to follow their hearts.

Oscar-winning actress Ardith Law is a Hollywood icon. Radiant at sixty-two, she is the epitome of glamour and a highly respected artist. But her success has come at a price: She has a strained relationship with her daughter, Morgan, who at thirty-eight still blames Ardith for putting her career before being a mother. Morgan is a successful plastic surgeon in New York City—and the distance from Ardith’s Bel Air mansion is not lost on either of them.

Ardith became a single mother when Morgan was seven, after her unfaithful husband died in a helicopter accident. In recent years, she has found amiable companionship with fellow actor Bill West. But Ardith’s comfortable world is turned upside down when she hires a temporary personal assistant, Josh Gray, while Bill is away filming in London. Josh’s rough-around-the-edges persona is the opposite of what Ardith is used to, but an unexpected tragedy brings them closer, stirring up conflicting feelings in her for this younger man.

In New York, Morgan is swept off her feet by world-renowned TV anchorman Ben Ryan. Though more than two decades her senior, Ben is handsome, charismatic, and just as smitten as Morgan. But when a blackmail scheme puts his career—and their relationship—on the line, Morgan doesn’t know where to turn. Perhaps . . . to her mother? As each woman navigates an unconventional romance, they cautiously approach each other on new terms and attempt to put aside their past for a new future.

In Upside Down, Danielle Steel tells an unforgettable story of bold choices, second chances, and the hope of reconciliation.

Lives come together and surprises happen. Age differences don’t matter, only the love each of them have for the other. Difficult events occur but when there is love and understanding life can be enriched.

This books reads well.It is engaging and you could read it in one swoop. However there are not a lot of surprises. I could predict every twist and turn after the main characters were introduced. It is not Jackie Collins who created mysteries out of thin air.

Dumb Attempt to be Topical

Age doesn't matter when you're in love. DS has written about this before & better. The older woman/younger man story is ok, but 76 yr old DS is writing about a long gone age of Hollywood - where 62 yr old women (e.g., Meg Ryan, Valerie Bertinelli, Jodie Foster) wear furs to the Oscars & funerals for 78 yr old journeymen actors are Major Events. The star actors who might fit that bill - Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty - are in their 80s & 90s. It's dated.

The whole older man/younger woman is offensive. In NYC, the 63 yr old man is a serial philanderer who causes a 38 yr old icy surgeon w/Daddy issues to fall in love after 1 date. He's the most famous TV news anchor in the US & this is where DS totally misfires w/the #metoo movement. He has sex w/a 22 yr old intern in his office because she came on to him so he says. Sex w/a lower level employee in the office is the problem not whether or not she might be pregnant. He, his lawyer, & the network boss all don't understand what sexual assault/harassment means. They don't need to anxiously await the results of a DNA test over several chapters while his surgeon GF (they've had 2 dates) falls deeper in love. He would've been fired the minute this became news. Absurd & offensive to REAL victims of workplace sexual harassment. Worse, to prove that he's not such a bad guy, the intern is revealed to be a violent mentally ill young woman. Of course.

I cut DS a lot of slack because she usually tells a good story despite her writing flaws, but this needed an editor who 1) understands sexual harassment in the workplace and 2) eliminates anachronisms. 2.5 stars rounded to 3 because the Hollywood story is sweet but out of touch; 0 for the NY story.

I’ve been reading her books for 40+ years. Only 2 I didn’t care for and this was one of them. Very predictable. I almost didn’t want to even finish it. But since I paid for the hardcover I had to finish.
