A brand new series. An iconic new detective duo. And a puzzling new murder to solve...

Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar habits and routines: the pub quiz, his favorite bench, his cat waiting for him when he comes home. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s business now.

Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. As a private security officer, she doesn’t stay still long enough for habits or routines. She’s currently on a remote island keeping world-famous author Rosie D’Antonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job...

Then a dead body, a bag of money, and a killer with their sights on Amy have her sending an SOS to the only person she trusts. A breakneck race around the world begins, but can Amy and Steve stay one step ahead of a lethal enemy?

If you love The Thursday Murder Club you will love this book. Lots of really, really great wit. As I am not British I am sure a few quips went over my head, but there are so many, it just didn’t matter. Great murder mystery, great characters, wonderful human insight and an all around fun read. I read a book a day - well written prose and a compelling story are hard to find. And, it makes you laugh and keeps you on your toes. Please write ten more quickly - as Rosie would say “chop, chop”, hmmm, that would be a great name of a book.

A Delightful Stand Alone

I assumed it would be the next Thursday murder Club book. But no. Its a whole new cast of characters that one loves as much as our older friends from the club. If Richard Islam has a single defining attribute, it is his talent for creating characters you really want to hang out with. Amy, the bodyguard, her father-in-law, the widower Steve, the irrepressible number two best selling author in the world Rosie, even the rarely seen or heard from Amy's husband Adam are all people you'd like to play pub trivia with, watch tv and hang out with, follow after them as they try to solve some murders before they are killed. You don't always get to have fun while the bodies pile up But with Osman at the helm you know the ride is going to be a lot of fun.

Then someone tried to murder Amy. Luckily Rosie has a private plane….Steve who wants to stay home talking to Deb joins them. Travels take them to Ireland, Dubai, London, pubs and golf courses, dead bodies pile up. Who is behind it all? Who’d want to assassinate Amy? And why? You’d never guess, nor have this much fun. This was by far the most entertaining book I have read this year. Such witty dialogue, exciting locations, and a twisty plot that had me stumped for once. The humor and characters in this book were really a hoot.

Not as good as "Thursday Murder Club

A mystery set in Axley, England, South Carolina, St. Lucia, Dublin, Dubai, and New York.

Richard Osman, author of “The Thursday Murder Club” mysteries, is back with a new series. I wanted to like this as much, but while it has its moments, “We Solve Murders falls short.

Widower Steve Wheeler, a retired detective, enjoys his routine in rural England. His daughter-in-law Amy, a high-end bodyguard, is the one with the exciting job. When Amy realizes she is being framed for three murders, she gets Steve to help her.

Richard Osman is skilled at characterization and “We solve Murders” is filled with intriguing characters, particularly Steve Wheeler and Rosie D’Antonio (the best-selling author Amy Wheeler is assigned to protect.) I’m not happy with the characterization of Amy. And, I found the plot contrived.

This is a fun introduction to a new series for Osman. Still on brand for charming characters to root for, especially the indefatigable Rosie. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the read I am disappointed with the conclusion. In a month I will probably remember the story but not have any memory if how it ends.

Almost as good as Thursday Club, but...

The three main characters are fun and well developed but there are way too many other characters, no way for the reader to sort it out for themselves, plot too complicated, and the villains too peripheral.
