New York Times bestselling author and Queen of Suspense Mary Higgins Clark’s masterpiece is a “crackling tale of menace and love that holds your attention to the last page” (Andrew M. Greeley).

Elizabeth Lange has arrived at Cypress Point Spa in Pebble Beach, California, weary of heart and soul. Still grieving for her beloved sister, a famous actress who plunged to her death from her Manhattan penthouse, Elizabeth is determined to unearth the truth about how Leila died.

Dashing multimillionaire Ted Winters stands accused of her murder, but Elizabeth has doubts. Along the windswept cliffs of the Monterey coast, in luxurious bungalows, between gourmet meals and beachfront walks, uneasiness stalks Elizabeth while she begins opening doors to the past.

As glimpses of the dark truth about Leila’s life and death—and about Elizabeth herself—start to crash against her mind, an ominous wave from an unexpected source threatens to engulf her entirely.

This is a story that weaves a tale of deception, mixed motives, treachery and betrayal. It is a well-crafted mystery that had me hanging on every word. This is a most excellent read!!!!!

Mary Higgins Clark delivers yet another amazing read. Just when you think you know who did it, you find out you aren't 100% accurate. I love how she writes!

Better as the printed version than the Kindle

I was amazed and aggravated to discover that the Kindle version of this book leaves the first part out. In the printed version, there is a prologue that takes place in 1969, when Elizabeth is eight years old. That prologue is not on my Kindle version. Without it, the story is understandable, but you don't fully understand the characters of the two sisters and you don't get a full understanding of why Leila didn't trust men. Surely it wasn't left out by accident, but I can't imagine why they'd leave it out on purpose. It seems very odd to me.

Other than that, the story appears to be the same: two sisters come to California; the oldest becomes a famous actress who dies when she falls or is pushed from her balcony. Family, friends and suspects gather at a world-class spa, owned by the woman who gave the actress her start, and new developments bring everyone to a surprising conclusion.

Worth a Read

Guess I'm just not into the drama connected with a mystery even if it is an excellent mystery. Characters well developed and lots of twists and turns before the ending finally revealed which should surprise most. Think I'll read it again now that I know the answer and see if it's more enjoyable.

To be honest, I figured out the killer VERY early in this book but I still enjoyed the way MH Clark weaved the story. The ending is a little taboo perhaps??? But otherwise, good character development. Getting into their heads was fun.

Great book, but it's fortunate that a friend of mine has a hardcover copy of this book, and as I start to thumb through it, I find out that the Prologue is not in the my Kindle edition. Why was this edited out. The story makes more sense after I read the first 3 pages. That's why I give it the rating. The story is well written (as usual); keeps you interested until the end.
