Shel Silverstein's most popular book, Where the Sidewalk Ends, is now available in a special edition containing the classic hardcover book and a CD of highlights from his Grammy Award-winning album. This is a wonderful gift and keepsake for Shel Silverstein fans, old and new.

From the outrageously funny to the quietly affecting—and touching on everything in between—here are poems and drawings that illuminate the remarkable world of the well-known folksinger, humorist, and creator of The Giving Tree, A Light in the Attic, and many other classics that continue to resonate.

You'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist.

Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings stretches the bounds of imagination and will be cherished by readers of all ages. This is a collection that belongs on everyone's bookshelf. Makes a great gift for special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, and graduation.

And don't miss Runny Babbit Returns, the new book by Shel Silverstein!

"And now, children, your Uncle Shelby is going to tell you a story about a very strange lion- in fact, the strangest lion I have ever met." So begins Shel Silverstein's very first children's book, Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. It's funny and sad and has made readers laugh and think since it was published in 1963. It was followed the next year by three more books. The first of them, The Giving Tree, is a moving story about the love of a tree for a boy. Shel returned to humor the same year with A Giraffe and a Half, delighting readers with a most riotous ending. The third book in 1964 was Uncle Shelby's Zoo Don't Bump the Glump! and Other Fantasies, Shel's first poetry collection, and his first and only book illustrated in full color. It combined his unique imagination and bold brand of humor in this collection of silly and scary creatures. Shel's second collection of poems and drawings, Where the Sidewalk Ends, was published in 1974. His recording of the poems won him a Grammy for best Children's Album. In this collection, Shel invited children to dream and dare to imagine the impossible, from a hippopotamus sandwich to the longest nose in the world. With his next collection of poems and drawings, A Light in the Attic, published in 1981, Shel asked his readers to turn the light on in their attics, to put something silly in the world, and not to be discouraged by the Whatifs. Instead he urged readers to catch the moon or invite a dinosaur to dinner- to have fun! A Light in the Attic was the first children's book to break onto the New York Times Bestseller List, where it stayed for a record-breaking 182 weeks.

This book is so beautifully written, and just goofy enough to appeal to youngsters even as young as 4 years. It also will amuse your pre-teen, and it's a great book to read together. It's a compilation of charming, silly poems that kids will quickly memorize. Perfect for bedtime reading.

This is a great book full of great poetry. I first heard of Shel Siĺverstein through Dr Demento and his song 🎵 of one of Shel Siĺverstein poems Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out. The liner notes on that cd 💿 said that the poem was also in his book Where The Sidewalk Ends which at the time ⏲️ I didn't get. Years later I found what turned out to be most of it on cď with poems like Eighteen Flavors Sister For Sale and many more. Crocodile Toothache was one of the funniest ones. I unfortunately lost that cd 💿 and was looking for another one when I found this book and immediately ordered it. It has all the poems from the cd 💿 and more like Santa And 🎅 The Reindeer my favorite of the ones that weren't on the cd and more. Like I said before this is a great book. You should get it.

A Classic for a Reason

WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS is a book of poems and illustrations by the amazing Shel Silverstein. I have read this book several times since childhood, have read it to my own child, and had my own child read it himself. This is the type of book that a reader can pick up flip to any page and then look up an hour later wondering where the time went.

Silverstein's work is very subversive in that he uses humor to mask serious themes. There is both innocence and complexity in each of the poetry vignettes.

Each time I read this book, I find something new in the poems.

This is an especially good book to read out loud to children because you can read as much or as little as your child can absorb. Eventually, your children can read the poems to you.

My current favorites are: It's Dark in Here (about being eaten by a lion), Listen to the Mustn'ts (about going beyond the negatives), Jimmy Jet and His TV Set (what happens to those who watch too much screen), Early Bird (advice for the bird and the worm), Hector the Collector (about beauty being in the eye of the beholder), Sarah Cynthia Slyvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out (what happens to those who ignore the trash), Pirate Captain Jim (proving the adage that the least competent rise to the top), Hungry Mungry (what happens when someone doesn't stop eating).

Some of the messages may be over the heads for children (and even adults!) to understand on the first, second ... fifth read but easy to enjoy
